This week, we are stressing the importance of monitoring current events and remembering significant dates as part of a robust compliance program. US regulators tend to recognize significant global events and anniversaries with new sanctions and financial restrictions. The beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine… the start of protests against fraudulent elections in Belarus… the anniversary of the coup in Myanmar that deposed the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi are all key events that almost certainly will result in additional designations every year.
But there’s so much more happening!
From the coup in Niger, to the anniversary of Belarus’s fraudulent elections and subsequent violent crackdowns on protesters, to corruption, to Haas Automation apparently continuing to send high-precision machines to Russia for the manufacture of more weapons for use in Ukraine, to a former senior FBI agent pleading guilty to working for one of Russia’s most corrupt oligarchs.
